A new and exciting Bridal Wear line is coming to Lagos in September 2015. Elegance, craft and skill are the emphasis for this made-to-measure service.
“I want my designs to reflect a sophisticated polish and bold simplicity,” says Rhoda Ejiga, the 37 Year old the brain behind Athaena Bride. Here she answers a few questions about the brand.
Q: What is Athaena Bride?
A: Luxury bridal wear tailor-made for today’s discerning woman – she is confident, elegant, accomplished and romantic, with sophisticated taste.
We are dream weavers, and like a fairy godmother we will help realise your dream dress. Our personalised service celebrates the individual, reflecting you on your big day. Whether we create your design for you, or you choose from our existing collections, the experience is the same; we will hand-craft, cut, drape, bead and embellish the gown for you, and on you. Athaena Bride is a brand synonymous with grace, elegance and craftsmanship.
Q: What makes Athaena Bride different?
A: Our gowns are not mass-produced; they are individually and carefully hand crafted for you. Haute couture skills, time and effort goes into making an Athaena gown.
Take the “Victoria” for example. It’s a confection of delicate hand embroidery which took over 150 man hours to cut and stitch each flower and petal. There are hundreds of pearls and Swarovski crystals sewn, like tiny prisms, refracting and reflecting light, resulting in a subtle elegant sparkle. The three-layered skirt is made from 30 meters of silk and gives a floating lightness.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Life, love and beauty. Love of travel, nature, new cultures, architecture, books, learning, and people. I am greatly inspired by ordinary people doing extraordinary things; by women and the progress we’ve made in a generation. The African woman inspires me – she is not afraid to stand out.
This love translates into the service we provide to our brides; we learn from them and adapt. In trying to make her look her best, we improve to become better.
Q: What inspired the debut collection?
A: Draping and embroidery are key features in this collection. Ancient sculptures from Greek mythology. There is also a reference to the Parisian couturier from the 1930’s Madam Gres. She was an artist with fabric. I have tried to keep the lines clean and structured, giving the garments a classic and timeless feel.
Q: Tell us a bit about you
A: I am from Kogi state. I was born in the US. I grew up and schooled in Kaduna and Jos. I moved to Port Harcourt after high school (where my parents still live). I attended university in the UK and work in the investment banking industry. I live in London at the moment.
Q: Finally, who is the Athaena Woman?
A: The Athaena woman is every woman. She is intelligent, beautiful, sexy and confident enough to know that she is powerful and deserves only the best.
