What does Vals day mean to you?
Hi.... My name is Kehinde Fowler, Happy Valentines day to you all. Lately, I was discussing with some of my colleagues in school about their take on valentine and I got so many interesting comments "I think the concept of valentine has been defeated and wrongly attributed. Originally, the day to celebrate St valentine was meant to reach out to the poor and needy.but lately, its been abused and limited to only lovers. I personnally think it has lost its essence. Another said: am not particular about gifts on valentine, a day to have fun with your loved ones and not necessarily your spouse, just unwind and have fun. An hilarious one was from one who said-its just like every other days like father's day and mothers day, where you just celebrate your loved ones. The last one said, valentine to me is another Christmas, when i get gifts from all my boyfriend's and go to places she loves to go, if any of my boyfriend doesn't show up or performs, thats the end of it, because people must know say I get boyfriend". So much to say about valentine but the question is should it be so? The first thing that comes to mind about valentine is the fact that its meant for lovers, when they go out to have dinners, exchange gifts and unwind or possibly end up in an hotel or house as the case may be. That's why most guys get cold feet before this day and cunningly break up with their partner to avoid excessive spending. Some guys also see it as an avenue to trick girls into bed, believing its love. I heard a gist recently that says"If you see him on the 14th-main chick, 15th-side chick, 16th-fling, 17th-sarewagba (loose girl) and if you don't see him at all then you are dating yourself".hilarious but not true to me. I was once a victim too, my soo called boyfriend kept me waiting and lying to me that he had so much to do at work amd his boss was keeping him, as a lover girl, I was understanding, of which I already strolled in to Novesa london to buy him a nice shirt and tie and also a perfume to go with it, hoping to get a suprise from him. To cut it short, he came around 11pm empty handed, begging and promising to make up for the day, we ended up going out to the cinema the next day and up till today, I dint get that gift.i had wasted money, so I said to myself and promised myself never to fall mugu again until am married. Along the line, I found out, he was with another girl that day, a day I'll never forget. But I still believe some good busy I guys are out there, who are so busy with work and dont even remember the date and shouldn't be crucified, for Gods sake, its not your birthday. So please, be understanding and give your spouse a chance to prove his/her love, not only on valentine, but every other day. My take on valentine is that it is overrated by Nigerians, it should be time to show love NOT only to your spouse but loved ones, the needy, family and to yourself. You can sleep all day if you want but PS:its not a public holiday, or go shopping alone or to the spa or movies and give yourself a treat, once in a year.its healthy that way than giving your self head and heartache over just one day, its not worth it. Thats my take on valentine, what's yours? . MIHJIFOWLER
